IIEST Shibpur has tweaked the timings of its end-semester examinations because of the heatwave.

The institute took the decision after students staged a protest in front of outgoing director Parthasarathi Chakrabarti’s office on Sunday evening complaining about their inconvenience.

The examinations scheduled from 2pm to 5pm will be held between 4pm and 7pm, says a notice signed by the institute’s joint registrar, academic.

The examinations were scheduled to start from April 29. They will now start from May 1.

An IIEST student said they protested especially because the day scholars — those who do not stay in on-campus hostels — were “finding it difficult to come to the campus in this scorching heat”.

The IIEST authorities met on Monday and decided to tweak the examination
timings.

Ishandeep Majumdar, a BTech student pursuing electronics and telecommunication at IIEST, said: “We want the IIEST authorities to defer the examinations until the heatwave subsides or allow the students to write the examinations online. Tweaking the timing won’t help much.”

An IIEST official said if students could write their examinations everywhere else despite the heat, IIEST students could do the same.

“Online examinations were allowed only during the pandemic-induced shutdown of the campus,” he said.
