At midnight of April 30, Calcutta woke up to the news that two young men, Khudiram Bose and Prafulla Chaki, had made an attempt to kill magistrate Douglas Kingsford in Muzaffarpur, but instead mistakenly killed two British women. Kingsford was notorious for his repressive measures against Indian revolutionaries. The police were asked to arrest Bose and Chaki. Chaki killed himself to avoid arrest but Bose was arrested. He was tried and hanged to death in Muzaffarpur on August 11, 1908, which became one of the most well-known episodes of the Indian freedom struggle. He was 18 when he died.
